Deep in the Ibera marsh
Several years ago we began exploring the endless system of channels and lagoons that are found in the reserve. During this time we realized the vastness of this water system and how much knowledge that we needed to acquire from the local people – the “Estereros”. With their help we began to understand the connection between their culture and the importance of the marsh to its existence. This was extremely important because the area, to date, had been largely undocumented, unexplored and untouched by outsiders and tourists.
This amazing ecosystem features large extensions of land and floating islands of vegetation. These floating islands create natural dams that are constantly opening and closing and continuously forming new creeks and channels. Water flows above and below this vegetative debris that in turn allows fish to migrate extensively and freely. Again, with the help from the Estereros, we learned to navigate this unique water system and discover its furthest reaches with our boats.
Over the past season we established and developed a truly one-of-a-kind camp that is located deep in the reserve. This allows our guests to fish on water that has extremely limited pressure or in fact may have never seen a fly. Staying at the camp also provides the possibility of interacting with the local people who continue to preserve their “guarani” language and the culture of their ancestors.
Guests have the option to step-away from a night of being pampered at La Alondra Lodge to a once-in-a lifetime overnight experience in the marsh. Here you can watch the sunset over a roaring bonfire and later stare into the night sky filled with millions of stars. Fantastic food, wine and fishing also await you during your visit to the most remote corners of the reserve.
