Ibera Reborn: A Wetland Paradise Awakens

For the past few years, a heavy heart hung over us at Set Fly Fishing. The once-majestic Ibera Wetlands, a haven for anglers and a vital ecosystem, had fallen victim to a historic drought. The lifeblood of the region dwindled, replaced by the threat of wildfires and a growing sense of worry.
But nature, in its resilience, has begun to stage a remarkable comeback. October 2023 marked a turning point. The long-awaited rains returned, their gentle touch restoring the wetlands to their former glory. The crystal-clear waters, a hallmark of Ibera, gradually reappeared as the system cleansed itself.
Our team, eager to witness this revival firsthand, embarked on exploratory missions starting in January 2024. Every month since, they’ve spent at least a week traversing the vastness of Ibera, meticulously assessing the overall health and the quality of the fishing experience.
The complexity of Ibera’s ecosystem continues to amaze us. While we may never fully grasp its intricate workings, we believe the recent high water levels have facilitated the arrival of fresh Dorado from the nearby Paraná River. Though these two systems aren’t directly connected on the surface, our theory is that high water allows fish to migrate through the “embalsados” (floating islands) that blanket the wetlands.
It’s with immense joy that we share this incredible recovery with you. Watching Ibera reclaim its status as a jewel among our fisheries fills us with anticipation for your next visit.

A Wetland Wonder: Unveiling Ibera's Secrets

Did you know that Ibera is the world’s second-largest freshwater aquifer? To put its vastness in perspective, its surface area doubles that of the Everglades! Nestled in the heart of Argentina’s Corrientes province, it boasts a tropical climate that beckons nature enthusiasts.
This remarkable wetland was once the bed of the mighty Paraná River. Over centuries, the river shifted its course, leaving behind a depression that transformed into a vast network of freshwater ecosystems. Seasonally replenished by rain, Ibera boasts a unique subterranean drainage system that feeds the wetlands and eventually flows back into the Paraná.

From Recovery to Thriving: A Guide's Perspective

January 24th, 2024 – Nico Gracia: “We explored Ibera from the upper reaches to the lower system on Trim Lagoon. While water levels have returned to normal, the visibility remains limited. Overgrown vegetation and oxygenation levels suggest significant water flow is needed for complete restoration. Unfortunately, we haven’t witnessed much fish activity, neither Dorado nor other species.”

February 24th, 2024 – Lucas Mora: “After three days of dedicated fishing, we’re happy to report the first signs of recovery with several small Dorado catches. Larger specimens might be holding deeper in the lagoon. Water clarity remains poor, but levels are near historical averages.”

Early March 24th, 2024 – Carlos Cavalli: “We waded into the water for a quick evaluation, and while the fishery wasn’t quite ready for prime fishing, we witnessed the first days of significant improvement. Water clarity has noticeably increased, and we’re thrilled to see large schools of Sabalo and other fish species returning to the system.”

Early May 24th, 2024 – Tette and Lucas: “The revitalization of Ibera is truly inspiring! We experienced incredible fishing action with many large fish. The water is as clear as ever, and we have no doubt that Ibera will be in peak condition after a winter filled with rain. We can’t wait to welcome anglers next September – it will be an unforgettable return!”
