Explosive Golden Dorado Strikes
By exploring the uncharted waters of the Ibera Wetlands and experimenting with many types of flies, we have discovered that surface patterns can consistently tempt monster golden dorado to strike! This exciting discovery has led us to develop new fly patterns and very effective techniques for fishing them. As a result, our entire team of guides in the Ibera Wetlands is targeting dorados almost exclusively on the surface.
Golden dorado are cunning apex predators that need to consume a lot of calories to survive and continue to grow. A large part of their diet consists of other fish, some of which can weigh several pounds or more. Dorado have mastered the art of ambushing their prey. They often wait near structure for an opportunity to present itself. They also hunt by working together to corral schools of baitfish or target a single fish. Golden dorado seem to prefer to eat a few large meals rather than many smaller meals. Between meals, dorado tend to be inactive until they decide it is time to hunt again.
Now back to our surface action at the Ibera Wetlands. While it was a tradition to fish with large mouse flies with decent success, those flies have a bulky profile that made our lives miserable when casting all day long. We have since adapted some saltwater patterns to our needs. They still have a large profile, but are not as bulky and so are much easier to cast over and over. T-walks and Crease flies have proven to be most effective and have become our flies of choice. They are durable and anglers have no problem casting them all day.
