The Northern Patagonia region contains an abundance of birdlife. Records show that there are more than 140 different species that are divided into three categories: steppe, forest and aquatic.
Florencia Macini is our specialist for this activity. She will take you on a full day field excursion into the Megellanic Forest in the Lanin National Park. There you will have the opportunity to view several endemic species such as the Megallanic Woodpecker and Campephilus Megellanicus. You’ll also see typical bird families that exist in this sub Antarctic region. This full day activity will begin and end at the lodge.
An alternative location to bird watch is in the Chapelco highland area. Many bird species arrive from the northern, high Andean plains or Puna during the summer. Viewing takes place in the high mountain areas. There you have the chance to see condors (vulture gryphus), ground – tyrants, sierra finches, among others.
Florencia, a biologist and university teacher, has resided in San Martín de los Andes (Patagonia) since 1999. She is an active member of a local non-profit, non-governmental conservation organization (Asociación Conservación Patagónica). Additionally, she has worked in several environmental education programs, including birding with elementary schools.
In San Martín de los Andes she collaborates as a guide in the ALAS Project. There, biologists, teachers, and children use bird watching as a medium to recognize and value the different local ecosystems
