Dorado 2022 Spring Season Fishing Report

Golden Dorado 2022

Spring Season Fishing Report

For over twenty years our mission has been to deliver the finest fly fishing experiences in Argentina. Every species we chase presents a unique challenge, and our approach has always been to find and pursue fish in destinations and fisheries that provide the very best opportunities and conditions for our guests, regardless of the operational difficulties those locations might bring.
During the last couple of seasons, an extended drought on the Parana River system and adjacent waters has presented a significant challenge. Through continuous trials and observation, we learned a great deal about having flexibility in our game, and finding the best experiences no matter the conditions.

The nature and behavior of Golden Dorado elevates the challenge to another level from what we typically face in trout fishing operations in the mountains of Patagonia. But, we’ve paid our dues and we are confident about meeting the high standards of service and quality fishing our clients have come to expect from us.

During the past couple of months, our new combination program between Itati Lodge and the Ibera Wetlands, and making flexible adjustments to our wetlands locations, have resulted in experiences that our guests are calling “the trip of a lifetime.”

September began with the continuation of lower water levels on the Parana, and the fishing remained average with some predictably good trips, while the Wetlands yielded very good numbers of Golden Dorado with several fish topping the 30 lbs mark. But by early October, the Parana River reached flood level and we experienced tough conditions for a few weeks.

As we roll into November, we continue to experience remarkable fishing with many large Dorado coming from the Wetlands, and the previous flood levels of the Parana have now receded to normal high water conditions with outstanding fishing. Many of our guests are now catching Golden Dorado over 40 lbs, and experiencing fishing beyond their wildest dreams.
We are fortunate to have a team of passionate fishing guides and explorers here at SET Fly Fishing. Without them, it would be impossible to find the locations and handle the operational challenges necessary to consistently exceed your expectations. In the near future, we will be adding two new destinations in the Golden Dorado area that will bring even more variety and diverse conditions to our menu, and our recently added Private Flight connectivity has made high levels of flexibility in the program possible.
Rachel Finn´s Bonus track - a 66 lbs (aprox) Surubi on the fly.
We’re delighted to share this current fishing update from the past few weeks, and would like to invite anyone who hasn’t yet experienced the thrill of landing a Golden Dorado to come fish with us at SET Fly Fishing soon.

I’ve enjoyed watching these incredible fish as they live, feed, and survive, in various types of fisheries and waterways. But only a few times in all of these years, and only in the farthest reaches of the Upper Parana River, was I lucky enough to witness the unparalleled drama of the Dorado spawning.

The primary prey fish of the Golden Dorado is the Sabalo, a medium sized schooling fish that often weighs between 3 and 5 pounds, which requires a bit of strategy along with opportunity.

These adventures are commonly reviewed as the highlight of the trip and more often we have requests from repeat anglers to do more adventure venues, which has been the motor for us to constantly seek for the next one to find.
