Hunting Trout

Hunting Trout

at Casa de Campo Lodge

Fly fishing clients often ask us: how do you hunt trout? I like to explain it as a game of strategy that more resembles a hunting expedition rather than typical fly fishing tactics. It begins with slow riverside walks, searching for a target trout, then a period of carefully studying the fish’s behavior and feeding patterns to conceive a plan of action. It is a fly fishing method that requires observation skills, clever reasoning, and patience. The reward is a memorable experience amid stunning wilderness scenery.

Casa de Campo Lodge is strategically located within easy access to the northern boundary of Lanin National Park, and a myriad of creeks, streams, medium-sized rivers, and the large Alumine River. There is a wealth of diverse water from which to choose. Many offer easy walking, wading, and elevated banks to use for sighting and deliberately stalking trout.

From the lodge, it’s possible to fish a different stream virtually every day, as well as float the major river of the area, the Alumine. And as many guests often request, an overnight adventure under the Patagonian skies is available with one of our famous Deluxe Camps.

Operating from the lodge, we have the advantage of being able to select the best areas according to water levels and weather conditions. The area is vast, and the landscapes change completely from one area to the next.

Although more advanced anglers might have higher odds of connecting with a trophy when stalking individual trout, we have guided many entry level fishermen to great success. In these places, a fisherman’s patience and attitude often mean more than technical skills. This game is about observation, patience, stealthy stalking, and then approach and casting. And just as in hunting, the rewards come as much from the experience as the final hook set.

Our guides love this destination and this method of fly fishing. There is something special about wading a remote creek that connects a fisherman to the elements of nature, and allows him-or-her to become lost in the moment. To locate a beautiful trout, and take the time to observe and understand it, raises the experience to another level … almost like being in the midst of your favorite nature documentary. Then imagine, landing that trout.

You might find stalking trout in the closeness of clearwater streams so addictive, that a single week will never be enough.
