Explosive Golden Dorado Strikes

By exploring the uncharted waters of the Ibera Wetlands and experimenting with many types of flies, we have discovered that surface patterns can consistently tempt monster golden dorado to strike! This exciting discovery has led us to develop new fly patterns and very effective techniques for fishing them. As a result, our entire team of guides in the Ibera Wetlands is targeting dorados almost exclusively on the surface.

Golden dorado are cunning apex predators that need to consume a lot of calories to survive and continue to grow. A large part of their diet consists of other fish, some of which can weigh several pounds or more. Dorado have mastered the art of ambushing their prey. They often wait near structure for an opportunity to present itself. They also hunt by working together to corral schools of baitfish or target a single fish. Golden dorado seem to prefer to eat a few large meals rather than many smaller meals. Between meals, dorado tend to be inactive until they decide it is time to hunt again.

Our challenge as dorado anglers is to trigger their hunting instinct or irritate them enough to attack. This is not always easy to do, considering that the average golden dorado fly is much smaller than a typical golden dorado meal. But we have found golden dorado to be very opportunistic hunters, so if the right fly is presented to them in a way that makes it look like easy prey, they will come out of their resting state and attack.
We target golden dorado with warm saltwater floating lines that have tapers designed to effectively turn over large flies. We often use variations of large Deceiver patterns tied on 2/0 to 6/0 saltwater hooks. It’s important not to use overdressed or bulky flies, since the idea is to present a large profile with good mobility. All of these fly characteristics are key to teasing this smart fish into action. We often have to cast to many different structures before we get one to eat, so using a fly that is as easy as possible to cast makes the day even more enjoyable.

Now back to our surface action at the Ibera Wetlands. While it was a tradition to fish with large mouse flies with decent success, those flies have a bulky profile that made our lives miserable when casting all day long. We have since adapted some saltwater patterns to our needs. They still have a large profile, but are not as bulky and so are much easier to cast over and over. T-walks and Crease flies have proven to be most effective and have become our flies of choice. They are durable and anglers have no problem casting them all day.

Those who have fished for dorados in the past, and have been impressed by their power and the speed of the strike, will now discover a whole new level of adrenaline. We often experience visual takes where we see dorados leave their shelter 20 to 30 feet away, creating a wave on the surface before exploding on our flies and jumping up to three feet with our flies in their mouths. More than ever, you will need to stay on your game to be able to keep your grip on the line and set the hook properly. It is the most exciting fraction of a second you will ever experience as a fly angler.

I’ve enjoyed watching these incredible fish as they live, feed, and survive, in various types of fisheries and waterways. But only a few times in all of these years, and only in the farthest reaches of the Upper Parana River, was I lucky enough to witness the unparalleled drama of the Dorado spawning.

The primary prey fish of the Golden Dorado is the Sabalo, a medium sized schooling fish that often weighs between 3 and 5 pounds, which requires a bit of strategy along with opportunity.

These adventures are commonly reviewed as the highlight of the trip and more often we have requests from repeat anglers to do more adventure venues, which has been the motor for us to constantly seek for the next one to find.
